Topping Trees
One of the worst ways to reduce the height of a tree is to simply take the top off. The most obvious disadvantages of this is the appearance with the tree becoming disfigured.
The sudden removal of the shade afforded by the trees crown can result in the remaining bark becoming "scorched" and the large cuts made in removing major branches are prone to insect and fungi attack. By taking off the whole crown the tree's ability to create food is also diminished with the possibility of starvation.
Not immediately apparent is the weakened new growth that will result in a much denser and taller crown in very little time resulting in an even worse problem.
